About Region 6

Region 6 is one of 10 geographic regions of IEEE.   Region 6 covers the Western U.S. – from Alaska to New Mexico and Montana to Hawaii and is shown in purple in the map above.  The Region has 35 Sections and 2 sub-Sections, organized in to 5 Areas: Northeast, Northwest, Central, Southern and Southwest.

Mission & Vision

To be the essential hub for technical professionals in the western United States, recognized globally for advancing technology and innovation. Region 6 will lead in shaping the future by leveraging its deep ties to major technology companies and research institutions, inspiring a diverse and dynamic community to improve global conditions through engineering excellence.

Strategic Plan

1. Membership Engagement & Growth

Goal: Strengthen and expand the largest IEEE membership base in the U.S.

  • Host regional in-person networking events in major tech hubs such as San Francisco Bay Area (including Silicon Valley), Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle.
  • Organize virtual networking events and webinars to increase members engagement within all Region 6.
  • Launch mentorship programs connecting students and professionals.
  • Partner with major tech companies (e.g., Microsoft, Amazon, SpaceX) and tech organizations (e.g. SEMI, CASPA, Computer History Museum, First Robotics) for joint events and sponsorships.

2. Innovation & Technical Excellence

Goal: Promote cutting-edge research and professional development.

  • In collaboration with IEEE Societies to organize an annual IEEE Tech Conference in Region 6 featuring emerging technologies.
  • Support local chapters in hosting workshops on AI, quantum computing, and sustainable tech.
  • Provide grants for member-led innovation projects.

3. Industry Collaboration

Goal: Deepen ties with leading tech companies and research institutions.

  • Establish advisory councils with representatives from Amazon, Apple, Google, Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, etc.
  • Facilitate internships and career fairs with partner companies.
  • Create a Region 6 Industry-Academia Innovation Forum.

4. Community Impact & Public Awareness

Goal: Increase public awareness of IEEE and to attract volunteers in supporting IEEE communities in leveraging technology to benefit society.

  • Support STEM education in local schools (e.g. TryEngineering, EPICS).
  • Participate in local Science Fairs and other related activities.
  • Partner with local agencies on IEEE MOVE program.
