Dear Members and Volunteers,
Welcome to the third edition of the Region 6 Newsletter! I’m excited to share some recent highlights and accomplishments from across our community.
- Volunteer Engagement: I’m thrilled to see so many of you expressing interest in volunteering. Your involvement is essential to the vitality of Region 6 and offers a fantastic opportunity to grow your leadership skills. If I’ve introduced you to local volunteer leaders via email, please feel free to update me on your progress—I’d love to hear how things are going!
- Collaborating as One IEEE: At the recent IEEE Enterprise GenAI Summit hosted by the Computer Society, we witnessed the power of collaboration across Organizational Units, truly embodying the spirit of One IEEE. Special thanks to IEEE President Hironori (Hiro) Washizaki for his leadership in making this possible.
- Rising Stars Across the Americas: Another inspiring example of One IEEE was the Rising Stars Latin American and Caribbean Conference held in Panama City, organized by IEEE Region 9. This event was inspired by our very own Region 6 Rising Stars Conference in Las Vegas. Over 200 attendees from many countries in Region 9 participated in this inaugural event. Region 6 was proud to support the launch by sending Mike Andrews, Scott Tamashiro, and myself to participate and represent our community. A heartfelt thank you goes to Region 9 Director Jenifer Castillo, Director-Elect Jose-Ignasio Castillo, Rising Stars LATAM Chair Ruben Barrera Michel, and the many dedicated volunteers who made this event a resounding success.
- Looking Ahead: 2026 Rising Stars Conference Don’t miss out! Take advantage of early registration discounts and secure your spot at the 2026 Rising Stars Conference in Las Vegas. It promises to be another unforgettable event.

IEEE Medal of Honor: Henry Samueli
|
| |
|
|
|
Samueli is an IEEE Fellow, recipient of the 2025 IEEE Medal of Honor, the highest recognition from IEEE, recipient of the 2021 IEEE Founders Medal, and member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and chairman of the Broadcom Inc board. He is honored “for pioneering research and commercialization of broadband communication and networking technologies, and promotion of STEM education.”
With a persistent vision to pursue the most advanced technology to deliver the most competitive semiconductor solutions for high bandwidth Internet connectivity, Henry Samueli, founder of Broadcom, has developed communications products that have touched virtually every person in the world. From his background as an electrical engineering professor at UCLA, through the early days after the founding of Broadcom in 1991, Samueli used his depth and breadth of knowledge spanning digital signal processing, digital integrated circuit design, and analog radio-frequency (RF) circuit design to provide a roadmap for combining analog, RF, and digital processing on a single chip using state-of-the-art CMOS technology, resulting in the highest levels of integration and performance. These system-on-a-chip (SoC) products have advanced dramatically over the past 30 years and now contain up to billions of transistors integrating complex analog and digital circuits all in one device.
Samueli was personally responsible for building a very strong engineering culture of open communication and cooperation at Broadcom. He devised unique and effective companywide technology review programs that enabled him to gain a deep understanding of every engineering project and set the company’s technology direction. His techniques greatly increased engineering efficiency, teamwork, and productivity. Samueli has also made major societal, educational, and economic impact through his philanthropy work, donating over $1 billion to various organizations focusing on STEM education, underserved youth, and integrative health. By endowing the Samueli Schools of Engineering at UCLA and UC Irvine, he has helped to ensure that future generations of students will be able to receive the same great education that he did.

Summer Networking Series – Connecting Students & Young Professionals!
|

|
 |
On May 27, July 17, and August 21, a series of casual, networking hangouts meant to facilitate connections between Young Professionals and Students, as well as help student members transition to YP members post-graduation! These events targeted 3 sections with active student members and interns over the summer to expand our reach as far as possible. The first event of the series in San Diego culminated in a casual beach volleyball networking session, Seattle had a bustling networking evening with refreshments and games; and Santa Clara enjoyed a vibrant evening in at a sports bar. Each event had an attendance of approximately 15-30 Students and YPs!
💡 These events were:
- Planned by the Region 6 YP Student-to-YP Transitions Chair, YP Affinity Groups & Student Branches
- Open to non-IEEE members to welcome future prospective members
- Supported by MGA YP STEP and Local Activity Funding
👏 A huge thank you to everyone who joined and helped make these events a success. We look forward to building even more connections across Region 6!

Universal Serial Bus IEEE Milestone Dedication
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
On Wed, July 30, an IEEE Milestone for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) was dedicated at Intel’s Jones Farm campus in Hillsboro, OR where USB originated as an important industry effort. This was the Oregon Section’s first Milestone 🌟.
👥Officiating at the event were David Silver (IEEE Oregon Section Chair), Alon Newton (R6 NW Area Chair), and Brian Berg (R6 History and Milestone Chair, who wrote the Milestone proposal). Also in attendance were key Intel employees who spoke about how they were successful in getting USB to be the most successful computer interface in history, as well as a number of Intel employees and other interested parties.
🪧The citation on the Milestone’s bronze plaque reads “An industry consortium published the first Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification in January 1996. Initially intended to simplify attaching electronic devices to a PC, USB became a very successful low-cost, high-speed interface for home and business use. Its ability to support new device classes and functionalities, including data storage, power delivery, and battery charging, has made USB’s cabling, connectors, and logo recognizable worldwide.”
📍 The plaque is available for viewing by the public at Intel’s Jones Farm Conference Center, 2111 NE 25th Ave, Hillsboro, OR, during weekday business hours.

Rising Stars Latin America and Caribbean Conference

Scott Tamashiro, Mike Andrews, and Joseph Wei proudly represented Region 6 at the inaugural Rising Stars Latin America and Caribbean Conference, held in Panama City and organized by IEEE Region 9 on August 15-17, 2025.
Inspired by the success of the Rising Stars Conference in Las Vegas, this exciting new event brought together over 200 attendees from across Region 9 to participate in leadership development, technical sessions, and networking opportunities. 💡🤝
A special highlight of the conference was when Mike Andrews received recognition for his visionary role in founding the original Rising Stars Conference—an initiative that has since inspired Region 9 and, hopefully, other regions as well. 🌟👏
It was inspiring to see cross-region collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the spirit of leadership thriving across the IEEE community! 🚀

2025 IEEE Enterprise GenAI Summit

Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, the Enterprise GenAI Summit brought together leading voices from industry, technology, and AI to explore the transformative impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on enterprise innovation on August 20-21, 2025.

Join us aboard the historic USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum in Alameda, California, for a full-day STEM Workshop with pre-university students. The event is organized by the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) in association with ISTAS25 and will feature hands-on activities powered by IEEE REACH.

IEEE Future Directions
|
The IEEE Future Directions Committee (FDC) seeks to identify, develop, and promote projects that are value-added for IEEE and its members, bringing together multiple Societies and Councils to provide broad and deep perspectives on a particular topic, application, or technology. These projects range from short-term activities to reach a specific goal to Future Directions Initiatives seeking longer-term cross-collaborative engagement among industry, academia, and government striving to develop and deploy various future technologies.
