SUMMARY:Samoa's Power System in Transition: Managing Grid Reliability\, Generation Constraints\, and the Current Energy Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provides an overview of the evolving power system in Samoa as the country increases its integration of renewable energy resources. The\npresentation introduces the structure of the national grid operated by Electric Power Corporation Samoa and highlights recent operational\nchallenges\, including generation constraints\, grid reliability\, and the current energy situation. Particular attention is given to the technical\nchallenges of operating a small island power system with high renewable penetration. Key lessons learned and potential strategies for maintaining\nreliable system operation during this transition are also discussed.\nCo-sponsored by: University of California\, Riverside\nSpeaker(s): Ms. Sadarina Lesa\,\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/549254

SUMMARY:CHEERS OCEANEERS! June 10th\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:CHEERS OCEANEERS! JUNE 10th 2026\nScaling Phytoplankton Observations and Participatory Science at the Ends of the Earth\nJoin us to hear from Biological Oceanographer and Executive Director Dr. Allison Cusick about how she is reimagining the ocean data pipeline by transforming global sea-going travelers into an active network of climate data collectors. Driven by a vision to scale oceanographic data collection and bring science directly to the public\, Allison launched a new 501(c)(3) non-profit\, Plankton Base. This venture builds directly on the 9-year operational legacy of FjordPhyto\, a citizen science program she co-founded and manages. Holding a Scripps PhD\, a StartBlue alumnus with a MicroMBA\, and running her own consulting LLC\, Allison bridges high-level marine research with expedition tourism and participatory science leadership. Come discover how she is expanding this proven framework to build public trust with hands-on engagement and scaling global ocean stewardship. Her work solves critical data gaps at the base of the marine food web—powered by phytoplankton\, the unsung heroes and microscopic engines running our planet\n***\nWelcome to the monthly event for the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES)\, San Diego Chapter\, which is hosting this meeting jointly along with TMA BlueTech (The Maritime Alliance)\, and MTS (Marine Technology Society).\nPlease join us for the main presentation and also plenty of time for networking and friendly conversation about everything oceanic\, engineering\, science\, Blue Tech\, and more. No need to be an IEEE or OES member\, or TMA\, or MTS. Everyone is invited.\nThis month\, we will be at Quantum Brewing again\, a cool science-themed brewery founded by a biochemist.\nNo ticket required\, but please order something for yourself from the brewery.\nPlease grab a bite from a nearby restaurant\, which is okay to bring into the brewery per the owner.\nThe food and drinks are not being funded by the hosts. Please open your own tab.\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Allison Cusick\nAgenda:\nAgenda:\n5:30pm: Arrival and networking\, order food/drinks for yourself.\n6:15pm: OES and other hosting group announcements.\n6:20pm: Main Presentation\n6:40pm (approximately): “open mic” for any other attendees to present anything they like (ocean-related\, of course).\nExamples: employers presenting opportunities for employment\, job seekers presenting a quick bio\, internship program opportunities\, promoting other events\, seeking funding\, “show and tell” of any cool technology you are working on\, etc.\n*For the open mic portion of the event\, please observe a time-limit of 3 minutes maximum per person. If you want to give a longer presentation\, please ask to be the main presenter for an upcoming monthly event.\n7:00pm to close: enjoy some drinks and chatting with fellow oceanic engineering enthusiasts.\nRSVPs are appreciated for planning purposes.\nBldg: Quantum Brewing\, 5375 Kearny Villa Rd\, #116\, San Diego\, California\, United States\, 92123

SUMMARY:IEEE Central Coast Event 10 June 6 PM @ Rusty's "Modernizing the Grid - The Missing Link"- Speaker: Kalyan Sen PhD
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The use of electricity is increasing rapidly due to the fast adoption of mega-sized data\ncenters\, electric vehicles\, etc. To combat the greenhouse effect\, the generation of renewable\nenergy is also skyrocketing. However\, the other important piece of the puzzle is to transport\nelectricity from where it is generated to where it is used in load centers in the most reliable\,\nefficient and affordable way. The power industry’s pressing need to transfer bulk power along a\ndesired path may be met by building new transmission lines\, which is a long and costly process.\nAlternatively\, it may be quicker and cheaper to identify the underutilized transmission lines and\nharness their dormant capacity to increase the power flows to the lines’ thermal limits by using a\nproperly-designed power flow controller. Also\, the grid congestion can be mitigated by holding\nthe power flow in a line at its design limit\, instead of tripping the line and possibly initiating a\ncascaded failure of the grid as it happened in 2003.\nThe presentation will be of particular interest to all utility power engineering professionals\,\nacademicians and researchers. The audience will hear from an expert who actually designed and\ncommissioned a number of power electronics-based FACTS controllers since its inception in the\n1990s.\nSpeaker(s): Kalyan Sen\,\nRoom: Event Room\, Rusty's\, 5934 Calle Real\, Goleta\, California\, United States\, 93117
