SUMMARY:2026 IEEE Student Challenge at Worldcon - From Fiction to Fact
DESCRIPTION:2026 IEEE Student Challenge at Worldcon – From Fiction to Fact\nThis competition invites participants to explore how ideas that once appeared only in science fiction can become real technologies\, systems\, standards\, and social innovations through engineering\, research\, and responsible design.\nThe theme connects well with Worldcon because science fiction often imagines future possibilities\, while IEEE communities help turn technological possibilities into real-world systems.\nParticipants will use large language models and AI-assisted creative tools to develop an original storyline around a common theme. Participants will leverage generative AI tools and information from the IEEE community. Participants will then transform their storyline into a short video clip\, poster\, or comic-strip storyboard suitable for public display. Winning entries may be showcased at the IEEE booth during Worldcon / LAcon V 2026 in Anaheim\, California.\nJoin the 2026 IEEE Student Challenge at Worldcon – From Fiction to Fact\nhttps://ieee-dataport.org/competitions/2026-ieee-student-challenge-worldcon-fiction-fact\nSubmission Dates: 07/06/2026 to 07/27/2026\nLAcon V 2026 – World Science Fiction Convention\, Aug 27-31\, 2026\, in Anaheim California: https://www.lacon.org/\nIEEE: https://www.ieee.org/\nSign up to volunteer at the IEEE booth during Worldcon / LAcon V 2026: https://forms.gle/69uVagGrvNDjpb7bA\nStudent competition hosted by the IEEE Region 6 Regional Student Activities Committee: https://r6.ieee.org/students\n[]\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/569149

SUMMARY:SusTech Talk July 2026 - Preparing for 100% Clean and Renewable Energy Systems
DESCRIPTION:“Preparing for 100% Clean and Renewable Energy Systems”\nwith Dr Ahmed Mousa\, Chief Innovation Officer for Galileo Group\, Inc.\nDate/Time: Tuesday\, July 28\, 6pm – 7 pm Pacific Time\nAbstract:\nThis talk will outline the characteristics of 100% clean and renewable energy systems\, and how we can prepare for them\, considering the guidelines of IEEE Planet Positive. Utilities must supply critical leadership in addressing climate change\, sustainability\, socioeconomic issues\, and environmental stewardship. The transition to a sustainable future requires balancing today’s short-term needs with future planning for 100% clean and renewable energy systems. Issues include global collaboration\, the role of inverter-based resources\, climate change mitigation\, large load vs. energy efficiency/load management and the future role of energy control centers. Supporting equity and inclusion mandates planning for rural electrification and for providing affordable power to disadvantaged communities.\nSpeaker(s): Ahmed Mousa\,\nAgenda:\n6:00 pm – Introduction of Speaker\n7:00 pm – Adjourn\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/566774

SUMMARY:SusTech Talk August 2026 – Heat Adaptation in Practice: Community-Facing Approaches to Extreme Heat in Singapore and India
DESCRIPTION:“Heat Adaptation in Practice: Community-Facing Approaches to Extreme Heat in Singapore and India”\nwith Veerappan Swaminathan\, CEO of SL2 Group\, Singapore\nDate/Time: Tuesday\, August 11\, 6pm – 7 pm Pacific Time\nAbstract:\nExtreme heat is an increasingly urgent climate adaptation challenge\, especially for older adults and heat-vulnerable households living in dense urban and tropical environments. While heat resilience is often discussed through the lens of policy\, urban planning\, or public health\, effective adaptation also depends on practical socio-technical systems that can work in real homes\, care facilities\, and communities.\nThis talk will share lessons from two ongoing community-facing projects: StayCool in Singapore\, which combines heat and humidity sensors\, physiological wearables\, an app\, heat alerts\, and trained volunteers to support vulnerable households; and a heat adaptation project at Muthiyor Nanban Home in Tamil Nadu\, India\, which uses site assessment\, environmental measurement\, stakeholder engagement\, and targeted interventions to improve thermal comfort for elderly residents. The talk will highlight implementation lessons for engineers interested in climate resilience\, sensing\, community systems\, and adaptation in practice.\nSpeaker(s): Veerappan Swaminathan\,\nAgenda:\n6:00 pm Introduction\n7:00 pm Adjourn\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/568260
