Dear Region 6 Volunteers and Members,
As we move through the second half of 2026, I am inspired by the continued momentum across our Region. Our community’s dedication to collaboration and innovation remains a beacon for IEEE. Here are a few key highlights:
Sections Congress
I am excited for our upcoming representation at the 2026 IEEE Sections Congress in Glasgow, Scotland (August 21–23). This triennial gathering is a vital platform for our Section leadership to share best practices and help shape the future direction of IEEE. I look forward to the strategies and collaborations our delegates will bring home to strengthen our local impact. A Region 6 dinner on Saturday is arranged for members who would like to join, please see an email on reservation.
Industry Partnership – CASPA x IEEE Summer Symposium
A major highlight of our summer was the successful co-hosting of the “CASPA x IEEE 2026 Summer Symposium” on July 18. I want to extend a special thanks to IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) VP Don Tan for his insightful keynote. This event underscored the value of strong industry-academic partnerships in advancing technology in the AI era., and the cross collaboration between industry partner CASPA with Region 6 and TAB.
Annual Elections: Planning for Success
The future of Region 6 relies on a robust leadership pipeline. As Sections and Chapters begin planning for the 2026 Annual Elections, please aim to conclude by December 15 to ensure a smooth transition.
Important: Please wait until August 31 to set up your elections in the vTools Nomination system to ensure your process reflects the latest election rule updates. Completing your elections on time ensures your new officers are invited to join our Region 6 Annual OpCom meeting for essential training and strategic planning.

Niru brings extensive experience in IEEE humanitarian technology initiatives, with a strong background in SIGHT/HAC and IEEE Smart Village.
In her new role, Niru will help coordinate and lead Humanitarian Technologies activities throughout Region 6, strengthening collaboration with IEEE HTB, SIGHT, SSIT, IEEE Smart Village, and other IEEE humanitarian technology initiatives and conferences, including IHTC across Regions 7, 8, and 9 and Region 10 humanitarian technology activities.
Her leadership will help connect Region 6 volunteers, technical communities, and humanitarian initiatives to expand the use of technology for sustainable development and meaningful community impact.

Meghana brings a strong background in enterprise AI, agentic systems, technology product leadership, and professional engagement. As Region 6 Social Media Lead, Meghana will help strengthen the region’s digital presence, increase engagement, and showcase the people, programs, events, and accomplishments taking place across Region 6.

Region 6 Governance Updates and Annual Elections
|
|
The future of IEEE Region 6 starts with strong volunteer leaders! The Region 6 leadership is working on updates to the Region 6 Bylaws and Operations Manual. These updates will:
✅ Align Region 6 governance with the latest IEEE and MGA policies
👥 Clarify leadership roles and responsibilities
🏛️ Strengthen organizational structure and governance
⚙️ Improve operating procedures and consistency across the region
Together, these efforts will help build a stronger, more effective, and future-ready IEEE Region 6 🌟.
💙 Now is the time for Sections and Chapters to plan for your 2026 Annual Elections and ensure a smooth leadership transition. To ensure newly elected leaders are well-prepared for a successful transition, IEEE MGA recommends:
📅 Elections begin no earlier than August 31 (after the vTools Nomination system is updated with the new election rule changes)
✅ Elections conclude by December 15
Completing elections on time ensures that your newly elected officers can participate in the IEEE Region 6 Annual OpCom Meeting, providing valuable leadership training, networking opportunities, and a smooth transition into their new roles.
⚠️ Important: Although MGA generally recommends beginning election activities around August, please wait until August 31 before setting up your election in vTools Nomination to accommodate the latest election rule updates.

IEEE Region 6 and the IEEE Santa Clara Valley (SCV) Section are strengthening industry engagement through OneIEEE at SEMICON West, taking place October 13–15 in San Francisco, CA. On June 6–7, 2026, IEEE Region 6 Director Joseph Wei participated in the Joint IEEE Regions 1 & 2 Board Meeting, held at the Washington Dulles Marriott in Herndon, Virginia, USA. The meeting brought together IEEE leaders from across North America to discuss key initiatives, exchange best practices, and strengthen collaboration across regions.
As part of the meeting, Joseph joined fellow Region Directors and IEEE leadership in sharing perspectives on member engagement, volunteer development, and strategic priorities. The discussions emphasized the value of cross-regional collaboration in advancing IEEE’s mission and enhancing the experience of members worldwide.

CASPA and IEEE Launch Joint AI Power Symposium!
|

|
On July 18, 2026, the Chinese American Semiconductor Professional Association (CASPA) and the IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section successfully co-hosted the 2026 Summer Symposium at Intel SC12 Auditorium. With more than 400 attendees, the event marked the first large-scale technical symposium jointly organized by CASPA and IEEE.
Centered on the theme “Paving the AI Super-highway: Where Power Meets Intelligence,” the symposium featured keynote presentations from industry leaders at Wolfspeed, E2+ Systems, Analog Devices, and Supermicro, covering next-generation power technologies, AI data centers, semiconductor innovations, and sustainable AI infrastructure.The event concluded with an engaging expert panel discussing the future of AI power delivery, cooling technologies, and intelligent energy systems.
🎉 This successful collaboration reflects the shared commitment of CASPA and IEEE to advancing innovation, strengthening industry-academia partnerships, and building the technologies that will power the AI era.

IEEE and GTCDC hosting Hands-On Summer STEM Robotics Workshop for Local Youth
|
| |
|
|
|
HAYWARD, CA – Glad Tidings Community Development Corporation (GTCDC) along with partner IEEE, is excited to host its 2026 Summer STEM Robot Cars Building Workshop on Monday, July 27, 2026, providing young people with an engaging, hands-on opportunity to explore robotics, engineering, coding, and problem-solving.
The workshop is expected to welcome 40 students, ages 8 to 16, along with more than 25 volunteers who will mentor and assist participants throughout the day. Volunteers include IEEE members, university students, local school district teachers, and community members who are passionate about inspiring the next generation of innovators and technology leaders.
During the workshop, students will build and program advanced ACEBOTT Smart Robotic Arm Cars using Arduino and ESP32 technology. Each team will assemble a robot featuring a 5-degree-of-freedom robotic arm, ultrasonic and infrared sensors, and 360-degree omnidirectional Mecanum wheels, giving students the opportunity to learn engineering concepts, coding fundamentals, teamwork, and critical thinking while completing exciting robotics challenges.
“We believe every child deserves access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities,” said Dr. Benita McLarin, Programs and Board Member of GTCDC. “This workshop is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and expose students to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through fun, hands-on experiences.”

2026 IEEE Student Challenge at Worldcon
From Fiction to Fact
|
|
How can today’s science fiction become tomorrow’s reality?
The 2026 IEEE Student Challenge invites students to imagine how futuristic ideas can evolve into real technologies, engineering solutions, industry standards, and societal innovations through research, creativity, and responsible design.
Participants will use large language models (LLMs) and AI-assisted creative tools, along with insights from the IEEE community, to develop an original story based on a common theme. The final submission can be a short video, poster, or comic-strip storyboard designed for public display.
🏆 Winning entries may be showcased at the IEEE booth during Worldcon / LAcon V 2026 in Anaheim, California.

Mark your calendars! EPICS in IEEE will be accepting project proposals from 1 September through 1 October 2026. We invite professionals, faculty, and students to collaborate with their local communities to create engineering solutions that create meaningful impact.
Selected projects will receive up to US$10,000, resources, and mentorship.

IEEE IAS Impact in Action – First-Ever Call for Proposals

The IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) and IEEE Humanitarian Technologies have launched the first-ever Impact in Action call for proposals. Grants of up to US$10,000 will be awarded for IAS members to implement real-world technology solutions that improve quality of life in their local communities.
📅Teams of active IAS members must submit their project proposal by 31 August for them to be evaluated. Proposals must leverage IAS-appropriate technologies and align with the Technology Impact Areas represented by a UN Sustainable Development Goal.
